Martin Luther King Jr Wading Pool Fence - Public Art Project Management

During my tenure on the Public Art Advisory Board for the City of Lancaster, members were responsible for pairing off to assist the public art manager in project management and fundraising for art pieces tied to city capital improvement projects. My first experience as a co-chair on such a project was an artist-designed fence titled, “Moving in the Right Direction” for the wading pool near Martin Luther King Jr Elementary School.

As co-chair, I assisted the manager with community committee creation, RRQ development, facilitating the artist selection process, fundraising communications, and navigating and matching needs and timelines of fabricators, the artist, and city public works. I was most proud of problem solving with the team to navigate the need for having continuous access to the utility meters for reading. Our original fence plan would place the utilities inside and locked. I suggested creating a smaller fence panel to be placed within the fence as a “hidden” gate with a latch that would remain unlocked. We could then build a chain link pen around the utility meters allowing staff to “enter” to read but would not allow anyone to enter the wading pool.
